Our Austin Chapter Head, Aarush Anand, hosted an Engineering activity for a group of underrepresented elementary students at a local non-profit. During the activity, students were tasked to create a bridge using only toothpicks and gumdrops to connect 2 structures. The goal was to see which bridge could hold the most penny-weights without any falling off. This activity taught the students innovation, creativity, and structural engineering principles to create the best bridge possible for holding weights. Using the engineering design process, the students learned how to create a plan, build the design, and test it. The winning team was able to hold 58 penny-weights on a singular bridge.
